Spring Program – 2017

The Spring Program of the Artists Residency will be hosted at The Salawas Village near Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

Rajasthan or the “Land of Kings” is one of the largest northern Indian states. Its palaces and forts are reminders of the many kingdoms that historically vied for the region and stand as an apt reminders of a rich, romantic past that speaks of heroism, honor and chivalry. Standing like a beacon amidst a stark desert and surrounded by the Aravallis, India’s oldest mountain range, it has attracted travelers for many centuries with its rich art and culture.

Our search for a vibrant and colorful location to hold an Artist Residency led us to the city of Jodhpur in the Thar Desert. The city is a beautiful amalgamation of the old and new, the ancient and the modern. The 15th-century Mehrangarh Fort set on a rocky hill, overlooks the walled city, where many buildings are painted the city’s iconic shade of blue. Another landmark is The Umaid Bhavan palace, which is one of the largest royal palaces in the world. The city has got some modern art galleries that showcase both traditional and cotemporary styles of artistic trends. The famous ones are Palette Art Gallery, Kaman Art Gallery and Adroit Art Gallery. These have held several significant exhibitions over the years, featuring some of the most gifted and exceptional artists on India’s contemporary art scene. Also lending a romantic aura to Jodhpur, are its exquisite handicrafts, folk dances, folk music and the brightly attired affable people.

For the Carpe diem Artist Residency we have chosen a village that lies just on the outskirts of the city of Jodhpur. Salawas is a small, peaceful and serene village about 20kms from Jodhpur. We shall be hosting the residency in the traditional yet well equipped huts provided with modern amenities. The village is inhabited by the traditional carpet weavers community.
